What is Obstetric Fistula?

Obstetric Fistula is a hole between the birth canal and bladder and/or rectum.
It is one of the most serious and tragic childbirth injuries.

How does Fistula occur?

Obstetric Fistula occurs when a mothet has a prolonged, obstructed labor without access to timely, high quality medical treatment. During the prolonged labor, the mother's contractions continually push the baby's head against her pelvis.
Soft tissues caught between the baby's head and her pelvic bone become compresse, restricting normal flow of blood. Without adequate supply of blood, section of tissues, die, leaving holes known as "fistulae" - between the mother's vagina and her bladder or rectum.

Remedy

If untreated, the woman will uncontrollably leak urine, stool or both, for the rest of her life. Surgery is the only cure.

How does Obstetric Fistula impact a woman's life?

Untreated Obstetric Fistula most commonly occurs in poor, rural areas. Unable to control the leaking of her body's waste, she suffers chronic infections and pain. The smell drives everyone away. With little community understanding of her injury and it's causes, a woman is frequently blamed for her condition. She lives in isolation, often isolated from all socio-economic activities within the community leading to severe depression.

Treatment

However, this condition is treatable through a reconstructive surgery, a medical procedure that most cannot easily finance and 100 Bob Initiative comes in to make these surgeries accessible to the women, support them psychologically and also economically.
